The teaching of social responsibility and volunteerism in universities was approved in 1988 by 388 university rectors in Europe. In the Bologna Universities Charter (Magna Charta Universitatum);
The future will be determined by cultural, scientific, and technological developments, it should be aimed to raise environmentally conscious generations and the understanding that serving society is also a function of universities the understanding has been emphasized, and in this context, four fundamental principles have been adopted: "autonomy," "the unity of teaching and research," "autonomy in teaching and research," and "a humane approach."
In the context of adapting to the Bologna process, YÖK has decided to offer a Social Responsibility Project course at universities. In order to ensure that universities integrate with society, YÖK finds it appropriate for this course to be offered at all universities. In this regard, Bülent Ecevit University has decided to implement the Social Responsibility Project course in various departments since 2007, considering it important in the context of integration with society. It is observed that approximately 2000-2500 students take the Social Responsibility Project course each academic year during the fall and spring semesters.
The individuals targeted for service through Social Responsibility Projects and Volunteer Work Courses are the Needy and Poor, the Disabled, the Elderly, Children, Youth, Women, Prisoners, Refugees, and Migrants. The topics covered include human rights, animal rights, as well as environmental and cultural heritage.
